The Money-tree

The money-tree grows on a hill
Quite difficult to find.
A rich arbour of good will,
                            Opulent and kind

It always has a question
  Which should be answered well.
                          A strange, arbitrary gestion
For a secret one must sell

If the answer is accepted
Some leaves will start to fall.
 Large amounts might be expected,
But they also could be small

Assets ripen in September,
So avoid a breezy day.
Gusts of wind, one should remember
Can blow all one's gains away

Never be ungrateful
Or try to rob the money-tree.
 Spend wisely and be thankful
That such fortune came to be.

The money-tree is old and wise
And really very kind,
But it grows upon on a mystic rise
  So difficult to find.

The money-tree grows on a hill
Quite difficult to find.
It has many branches
And is generous and kind

But it always has a question
Which must be answered well.
This may not be difficult,
But one can never tell.

If the answer is accepted,
Some leaves will start to fall.
It may be a large amount,
It also could be small.

One should never be ungrateful
Or hurt the money-tree.
Spend everything it gives you
As quickly as can be.

The money-tree is old and wise
And really very kind,
But it grows upon a hill
So difficult to find.

Rain-man

Scottish myths 34

Wulver

One should never confuse the Scottish 'Wulver' with mere werewolves. The latter are revamped cinema versions, exploited also to sell video games to bored, bloodthirsty video game enthusiasts, whereas the extremely ancient Wulvers are far more unique, because in spite of their appearance, they have an altruistic nature.

Ancient Celts were intelligent enough to be able to reason that Wulvers somehow generated initially from wolves, although there's no recorded biological Darwinian evidence of how this ever came about. Wulvers are alleged to have lived in the Shetland Islands, but it's written that they have also been sighted on the coastal mainland of Northeast Scotland.

If one assumes that Wulvers belong to the long distant past, (which those who prefer to believe that legendary Scottish creatures are ever present, should dismiss) their most important era would have been prior to the ancient Roman or Norwegian occupations of Scotland and its Islands.

In old Celtic scripts, Shetland was known as Inse Catt which means the Isles of Cats. One assumes that this name was used by the pre Norse inhabitants. Perhaps they were fond of cats but had trouble keeping their numbers down. One might then imagine that Wulvers were employed for that very purpose, but nothing has been written until today about such a nebulous possibility.

In appearance the Wulver has the head of a wolf and the body of a man covered with short brown hair. With such short hair, one would prefer to think that the creature is additionally covered in a decent way, although not necessarily in Highland plaid. Any intentions of performing altruistic deeds would otherwise run the risk of being misunderstood, because it's said that Wulvers leave haddock, cod or other such fish on the windowsills of the poor. Now if a poor women ever saw a furry, naked man with a wolf's head slipping a fish on her window-ledge, no matter how ravenous she was, it's unlikely that she would be tempted to even approach such a gift. We must therefore assume that Wulvers leave their gifts in the most discrete way possible during the night, and that they would then have to stand watch to make sure that the cats didn't make off with the fish.

Some say that Wulvers are in fact immortal spirits, so they would never have to bother even about underwear. Yet, there is no doubt whatsoever regarding the visual description of them.
Wulvers dwell in dug out caves about half way up the side of steep knowes, the Scottish term for Knolls. I'm more inclined to think they would be braes, the Scottish term for hillsides, because a knoll would seem to be a bit smallish unless Wulvers are nains.

Wulvers are not aggressive, providing they are not aggressed, and that they are left in peace. One of the reasons for this is that they are fond of fishing, not only sea fishing but also river fishing. For the latter silence is essential. Salmon and trout especially never seem to suffer from deafness and are therefore sensitive to nearby sound and movement vibrations.
Wulvers' stanes are therefore quite common. They are fairly flat stones extruding from lochs and rivers, or found on the banks from where Wulvers fly fish. As no one has ever seen them actually dive for fish or has ever alluded to them leaving their stanes whilst fishing, one must conclude that they have proper rods, lines and tackle, and are respectable anglers.

Should you ever catch a glimpse of one, shrouded in mist rising from such a loch or river late on an autumn day, you should consider yourself extremely fortunate, not only because it's not everyday that one has the privilege of actually seeing a fishing Wulver, but because it's said that whoever sees one of these generous and considerate creatures, will be blest with fortune. Not necessarily by returning home to find a fish on one's windowsill, but by being mysteriously led, as if by Highland magic, to discover the whereabouts of hidden treasure in the ruins of an ancient castle. And then to be able to report the discovery to the Scottish National Trust and deliver the cask and its precious contents to the nearest police station.

Rain-man ballad

 Those who've seen the Rain-man
Sneaking out at night,
Incognito on his scooter,
Say it's the strangest sight

Thus disguised with helmet
He scooters forth anew,
Even though it's walking distance
To the lieu de rendezvous

Such affairs are secret,
If affairs of State
Should be so dissimulated
And held to be private

Discretion is the essence,
One's facade of probity
Seems to be far more important
Than one's security

'Mustn't forget the croissants'
(Such thoughts traverse his mind)
More urgent affairs of State
One then would never find.

Light and shadow

A day graced by three messages that give me a lot of pleasure.
They evoke warm memories, all the more so with today's fine weather. The long shadows pattern the road as I drive up to the village once more, and no doubt even they contribute to this nostalgia.

Tapering clouds fly gloriously across the sky. They always seem to express time sweeping by. And the shadows make one think of those in life. But there are no regrets. Light also determines shadows, as life also determines death.

Could it be the Scottish heritage, the Highland common sense that helps us to avoid the obstacles that can so easily complicate life, testing enough in itself already? If so, I must be one of the lucky ones. A family is truly blest if when confronted with a totally unanticipated and tragic situation, it can settle everything within a few hours, without the slightest problem, as if the parents were still there, looking down upon their children, laughing as they so often did when the family were all together, and gently guiding them.

Whereas much gloomier shadows seem to cast themselves upon others. One finally reaches the conclusion that certain negative situations have been virtually programmed from the start. As if in spite of what one is convinced to be the best advice and help that one can try to offer at the best possible time, nothing can alter what seems to be a predestined fatality. The problem, an endless family feud, seems irresolvable.

Such a tragedy would have inspired Shakespeare. The characters of the play don't need any further emphasis. Even as they actually are, they might appear to be caricatured. There is, as referred to once before, a terrible similarity with Shakespeare's 'King Lear' and the folly of vanity. When, before the final curtain, the futility is sadly revealed, in all its desolate, hopeless and worthless misery, then one is also fully aware of the horror of it all.

If one believes, without any regret whatsoever, to have given the best years of one's life, in helping to keep such a location going, and to make it and it's immediate surroundings more beautiful, such a consequence can only bring sad resignation. Not in as much as one's personal efforts carried out with love and dedication also seem destined to come to such a tragic end, because no one can ever take away the satisfaction that one had in accomplishing them, whatever the final consequences. The sadness comes from the knowledge that one's children risk to inherit the same problem, or that they, and particularly one's own of course, will never benefit at the best possible period of their lives, also from one's own efforts. And that such a location that should always have been lovingly cared for and generally appreciated as an Eden, seems irrevocably fated to end up as a lonely lieu of interminable dissent.

Such were the thoughts that past through my mind today.
Despite whatever one has to contend with, life is always beautiful. I like to think that if you sincerely believe this, then life itself will smile back at you. You get what you give, in love and in war.
So one must accept the shadow that comes with the light. They are inseparable. Together they are beautiful. They determine each other and everything else in every way.

Insieme viaggiamo
Nella notte tranquilla
Fra tante stelle
Scintillando
Sia vive
 Sia morte

Insieme viaggiamo
Nella notte sublime
Mano morbida
Sull'orecchio
l rumori
Cullandoci

Viaggiamo insieme
Nella notte eterna
Scintillando
Come le stelle
Sia vivi

Reflections

It may be a sign of the times that I haven't received the annual, prized envelop from David, to use as a clin d'œil to introduce a few words to celebrate the first day of the New Year, 2014.
He always manages to find an idea to scribble out on his addressed envelops to illustrate the mood in France, if not in Europe generally, regarding the year that has just ended.
As things seem even worse in France, it would be understandable if one is less inclined to bother to try to underline the fact in an amusing way. The bleak situation would hardly inspire this.

So, at least for the time being, we shall have to settle for a candlelit scene with Gatsby (the cat). This was taken before the oysters were opened and the Champagne uncorked.

Last year on the first of January, I wrote a long litany about the French political scene. As nothing has changed for the better, I would be repeating myself by expressing the same opinion of why, in my modest view, this is still the case.

But what has been particularly irritating during 2013 is the French government's tendency to use social issues to hide its incapacity to solve far more urgent matters. Thus the government led by the potely image of F. Hollande, marches as to war against mythic 'racism', also to rescue Madam Taubira the minister of Justice, (who was more a target of justified criticism for her laxist stance and ministerial incapacities than of any racism). Then there was the noble fight against 'homophobia', because according to the socialists 'mariage pour tous', (except for F. Hollande) is an honourable cause as well as a means of boosting the importance of the State, reducing the importance of the family, and trampling on the Church for good measure.

In fact the year ended with the ridiculous circus of trying to outlaw a mediocre comedian for alleged antisemitism. Hardly anyone had ever heard of the guy before, but now he has benefitted from free promotion thanks to the French government's ministers. They are even considering to outlaw the 'quenelle', a sort of salute that one pretends has Nazi connotations. Thus naturally this ambiguous salute, which I had never heard of before, has also been given a free boost.

It seems evident that the French government has no idea regarding basic pyschology. By shedding light on the obscure, on unimportant mediocrity, one not only brings it into light, one even gives it a greater reason of being. One is therefore responsible for encouraging whatever 'evil' one intended to quash.

From time to time F. Hollande and his government come up with formulas or pactes. They seem to think that pat phrases are remedies in themselves. The most important one announced by Monsieur Hollande during his televised New Year speech was 'le pacte de responsabilité'.
In a way it seems more like the shedding of responsibility. The idea is that the government is at last prepared to reduce to some extent the heavy charges and taxation that French companies have to contend with, but in exchange the companies have to employ more personnel. Obviously this is to try to reduce the disconcerting, ever increasing unemployment level in France.

Had Monsieur Hollande thought of this before he was elected, instead of pandering to the naive and the frustrated by declaring his populist intention of making the rich pay, naturally including any businesses that were still managing to survive the crisis, it may have already produced the desire effect during 2013. So it really seems to be an unrealistically belated proposition, simply because it should have been applied as soon as possible in 2012.

To make a simple parallel, it's seems to me as if one had a work horse that one fed and treated badly, to the point where the horse was no longer capable of doing the work expected of it. Finally exhausted the horse becomes very ill. Seeing the worsened state of things, the person responsible decides to give the horse a bit more to eat, but in exchange the horse must immediately get well, pull itself up in order to accomplish not only the work normally expected of it, but even more.

Hopefully. I'm wrong and that at last Monseur Hollande has begun to get things right, and that it's not too late. Hope is a wonderful thing. One cannot live or achieve anything without hope, providing that it's always tempered with realism.

So let's hope for a better year for everyone, with special, get well thoughts to those who need them most.

Happy New Year to everyone!
